“PM’s $736K Egypt Trip Sparks Parliamentary Outcry”

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney faced criticism in Parliament on Wednesday after it was revealed that his impromptu trip to Egypt for the Gaza peace summit in October cost Canadian taxpayers over $736,466. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre spearheaded the opposition, highlighting the hefty expense of the trip amidst financial struggles for many Canadians.

Poilievre accused Carney of indulging in an $800,000 private flight to Egypt for mere photo opportunities, dubbing him as the “Grinch of the grocery store.” He questioned why Canadians were struggling to make ends meet while the prime minister was jet-setting around the globe.

In Carney’s absence during the parliamentary session, government House leader Steven MacKinnon and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand defended the trip, emphasizing Carney’s contribution to international efforts for peace in the Middle East.

The clash in Parliament ensued following a disclosure that the chartered jet for Carney’s trip cost significantly more than if government resources had been used. The government chartered a Bombardier Global 5000 jet, while estimates indicated that using a government-owned Challenger aircraft would have been more cost-effective.

Despite the steep expenditure, the government justified the choice of the private jet, emphasizing the urgency and significance of the summit. Carney’s attendance at the summit, alongside other world leaders, aimed to advance peace efforts in the region.

The decision to charter the jet was approved by the ethics commissioner’s office, citing operational constraints that led to the unavailability of government aircraft. Carney’s spokesperson highlighted the importance of Canada’s participation in the peace summit and the leadership role played by the country.

Following the summit, reports emerged of fruitful discussions among leaders, including Carney, on providing aid to Gaza and fostering peace initiatives. While some questioned the cost of the trip, others recognized the diplomatic value and global leadership demonstrated by Canada’s presence at the summit.
