“Japan Marks 10 Years Since Devastating Earthquake and Tsunami”

Date:

Japan observed a moment of silence at 2:46 p.m. local time to commemorate the start of a powerful earthquake a decade ago that triggered a devastating tsunami and nuclear emergency in the country’s northeastern region. Concerns were raised by a survivor over the fading memory of the catastrophe as individuals paid respects by offering flower bouquets, visiting graves, and praying for the loved ones lost to the disaster.

Despite restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, dignitaries and survivors’ representatives participated in a memorial event, with many others following the proceedings online or through television broadcasts. The catastrophic 9.0 magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011, unleashed a colossal tsunami, leading to widespread destruction and nuclear reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, resulting in an estimated 20,000 fatalities.

Various events took place across Japan to mark the anniversary, including the release of balloons with messages in Natori, fireworks display in Futaba, and lanterns released in Hirono to honor the victims. In Tokyo, a national memorial service saw attendees placing flowers at an altar for the victims, with Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga observing a moment of silence.

The aftermath of the disaster was marked by fear and uncertainty, with explosions releasing radiation and frantic efforts to cool the nuclear fuel at the plant. A decade later, over 40,000 individuals remain displaced, and certain areas near the damaged facility are still restricted due to radiation contamination. Extensive reconstruction efforts have been undertaken, costing over 30 trillion yen, to rebuild infrastructure in the affected regions.

While progress has been made in rebuilding, there are still no-go zones in Fukushima where abandoned properties and radioactive waste pose ongoing challenges. The lives of many were forever changed by the disaster, with over 18,000 casualties, widespread displacement, and long-lasting impacts on the affected communities. Despite the passage of time, the memories of the disaster continue to shape the lives of survivors and the ongoing recovery efforts in the region.
