“Huskies Secure Hardy Cup with 25-24 Victory, Eye Vanier Redemption”

Date:

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies secured a narrow 25-24 victory over the Regina Rams on Saturday to reclaim the Hardy Cup, clinching the Canada West football championship and seeking redemption for last year’s 19-14 loss. This marked the 88th Hardy Cup and only the second all-Saskatchewan championship matchup in over two decades, as well as the first consecutive provincial final between the same teams. The Regina Rams had previously claimed their first all-Saskatchewan Hardy Cup in more than 20 years during the prior season.

In a thrilling fourth quarter turnaround, the Huskies, trailing 24-9, staged an impressive comeback, scoring 16 unanswered points to seize the title. Kicker Lucas Scott sealed the victory with a decisive field goal, emphasizing the significance of the moment for the team’s season.

Senior running back Ryker Frank characterized the team’s resilience in the second half as a testament to their unwavering spirit. Head Coach Scott Flory commended the team’s composure in the crucial final minutes despite facing challenges such as turnovers and misplays.

With this triumph, the Huskies are one step closer to the Vanier Cup, set to be held in Regina later this month for the first time and only the third time in Western Canada. Their upcoming challenge is the Mitchell Bowl, where they will clash with Queen’s University in Saskatchewan next week.

Frank emphasized the team’s diligent work ethic and cohesive culture as pivotal elements in their preparation for significant moments like the Mitchell Bowl. The Huskies, who previously secured the Hardy Cup in 2021 and 2022 but fell short in the Vanier Cup both years, entered the playoffs with an impressive 7-1 regular-season record, clinching the top spot in the Canada West conference.

On the other hand, the Rams advanced to the final by prevailing over the Manitoba Bisons in an intense 32-29 double-overtime semi-final. The Mitchell Bowl is scheduled to take place on November 15 at 2:15 p.m. CST.
