Aaron Rai clinched victory at the Abu Dhabi Championship by sinking a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Tommy Fleetwood after carding a 5-under 67. Rai, who marked his return from a two-month hiatus, secured his third European Tour title and first win this year, reminiscent of his 2020 Scottish Open triumph over Fleetwood. Additionally, Rai had previously won the Wyndham Championship in August 2004, claiming his inaugural PGA Tour title.
Rory McIlroy showcased a stellar performance with five consecutive birdies on the back nine at Yas Links, finishing with a 62, his lowest score on the European Tour. Despite ending up one stroke behind Rai and Fleetwood, McIlroy extended his lead in the Race to Dubai, which concludes the following week.
Fleetwood, aiming for his third global title in a remarkable season that included a victorious Europe Ryder Cup campaign, matched Rai on 25-under 263 after a round of 66. The two competitors narrowly missed birdie opportunities on the par-5 18th in regulation play.
The playoff duel excluded McIlroy and Nicolai Hjogaard of Denmark, who narrowly missed joining the playoff by just missing a 15-foot eagle putt on the final hole. Rai expressed his elation, stating, “It’s hard to put into words how this feels. It’s amazing to be here.”
In a tight battle marked by low scores, Rai encountered challenges with missed putts but managed to stay in contention with crucial birdies. The playoff evolved into a test of short-game prowess as neither player could reach the green in two shots on the 616-yard hole. Rai’s successful birdie putt secured his victory over Fleetwood.
The triumph propelled Rai from 55th to 9th in the Race to Dubai standings, securing his spot in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. McIlroy, the defending champion for the upcoming week, solidified his position as Europe’s top golfer with a runner-up finish in Abu Dhabi.
Marco Penge of England closed with a strong performance, tying for ninth with a 63, but remains 767 points behind the leader. McIlroy emphasized his strategy of aggressive play to secure the tournament win and bolster his lead heading into the Dubai event.
