Ian Williams, the acclaimed writer behind the novel “Reproduction,” delved into the world of construction to craft his latest book, “You’ve Changed.” As a versatile author of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, Williams’s literary repertoire includes award-winning works such as “Reproduction” and the 2024 Massey Lecture, “What I Mean to Say.”

Presently serving as an English professor at the University of Toronto and overseeing the creative writing program, Williams explores the complexities of relationships in “You’ve Changed.” The narrative revolves around Beckett and Princess, a middle-aged couple facing marital challenges exacerbated by a weekend visit from friends. While Princess contemplates cosmetic surgery to address their issues, Beckett opts to revive their relationship by re-launching his contracting business.

The thought-provoking novel delves into the dynamics of change within relationships, a theme that garnered it a spot on the 2025 Giller Prize longlist. In a recent interview on “Bookends with Mattea Roach,” Williams shared insights into the book’s origins, revealing that the title was inspired by a mural in Toronto bearing the phrase “You’ve Changed.”

Exploring Beckett’s character, a white Quaker from Maine, Williams discussed his deliberate choice to inhabit a perspective distinct from his own, emphasizing the importance of empathy and understanding diverse viewpoints. To immerse himself in Beckett’s world, Williams underwent a construction course in Toronto, building and deconstructing a house to gain a deeper insight into the character’s mindset.

Examining themes of manhood and identity, Williams highlighted how Beckett’s sense of masculinity is intertwined with his work and possessions, reflecting societal norms and expectations. The novel serves as an exploration of gendered roles and the complexities of personal identity in a world where occupation often defines one’s status and self-worth.

In a society where profession serves as a shorthand for social standing and values, Williams’s narrative delves into the nuances of human relationships and the multifaceted nature of change and self-discovery. His engaging storytelling and insightful exploration of character dynamics make “You’ve Changed” a compelling read that resonates with readers seeking a deeper understanding of love, identity, and transformation.
