Alberta Students Embrace Extra Sleep Amid Teachers’ Strike

Date:

Many students in Alberta are enjoying the extra sleep they are getting due to the ongoing provincewide teachers’ strike, now entering its second week. With approximately 750,000 children out of school, students like 15-year-old Declan Reid are finding ways to stay occupied, such as attending unofficial football camps and spending time with friends.

For Declan, a freshman linebacker, the strike has put a pause on his team’s games, affecting older players who are in their final season and hoping to showcase their skills for college recruitment. While he misses playing football, he understands the situation and hopes for a swift resolution to the strike.

Other students, like Grade 8 student Adilee Verburg from Red Deer, are feeling the effects of the strike on their daily routines. Adilee, whose mother is a teacher, expresses a desire for the strike to end soon, believing that if the government heeded teachers’ concerns, the situation could have been avoided.

The strike, involving 51,000 teachers, is the largest in Alberta’s history, with the first formal bargaining meeting scheduled for Tuesday between the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the government’s team. Finance Minister Nate Horner mentioned receiving a counter-offer from the union, which will be discussed during the upcoming meeting.

Despite a previous offer from the government that included a pay raise and additional teacher hires, the teachers’ union and government remain at odds. The union, led by President Jason Schilling, argues that more teachers are needed to address classroom overcrowding effectively.

As students like Grade 5 student Sloane Laurence keep themselves busy with studies during the strike, the uncertainty of when schools will reopen lingers. Meanwhile, students like Melissa Qerimi at the Alberta School for the Deaf in Edmonton are feeling the pressure of managing schoolwork without teacher guidance.

While students appreciate the break from school, many are eager to return to their classrooms and resume their usual routines. The ongoing strike has left students, parents, and teachers hoping for a swift resolution to the impasse between the teachers’ union and the government.
