Alphonso Davies Returns for Bayern Munich After 262 Days

Date:

Bayern Munich saw the return of Canada’s Alphonso Davies as he made his comeback after 262 days following a severe knee injury. The 25-year-old Canadian, hailing from Edmonton, entered the field as a substitute in the 88th minute during Bayern’s 3-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League clash held at Allianz Arena.

Josip Stanisic initially played in the left back position for Bayern against Sporting Lisbon, but Davies hinted on the Film Never Lies podcast the day before the match that coach Vincent Kompany might include him in the game. “I’m uncertain about getting playing time,” Davies mentioned. “It’s ultimately the coach’s decision.”

Davies took the place of German star Serge Gnabry, who was one of the goal-scorers for Bayern. The left-back had been sidelined since sustaining an injury in March while representing Canada against the United States in a CONCACAF Nations League fixture. Davies suffered a ligament tear and other knee damage during that game.

Following his injury, Bayern criticized the Canadian national team, claiming that proper medical evaluations were not conducted on Davies before he flew back to Germany.
