“Australia Launches Nationwide Gun Buyback Program”

Date:

Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, announced the initiation of a nationwide gun buyback program following a tragic incident at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney. Albanese stated that hundreds of thousands of firearms are expected to be collected and disposed of through this scheme. This initiative mirrors the gun reforms implemented after the 1996 massacre in Tasmania’s Port Arthur. The aim is to reduce the number of firearms on the streets in response to the recent events at Bondi.

The attack at the Hanukkah celebration resulted in the loss of 15 lives and numerous injuries. The main perpetrator, a 50-year-old gunman with a firearm license and registered guns, drew attention to the need for stricter gun laws in Australia. Currently, an estimated four million firearms are in circulation in the country.

The government plans to target surplus, newly banned, and illegal firearms through this buyback scheme, with costs to be divided between federal and state authorities. Following the Port Arthur tragedy, a similar buyback program led to the surrender of approximately 640,000 prohibited firearms nationwide, costing around $304 million Australian dollars.

In response to growing concerns of antisemitism, Albanese’s government is also focused on strengthening hate laws. Authorities suspect that Sunday’s shooting may have been influenced by ISIS, prompting increased police presence and vigilance to prevent further violence. Recent police actions in Sydney led to the detainment of seven individuals, suspected of planning a violent act.

While no direct link has been confirmed between the detained individuals and the Bondi attackers, there are ideological similarities. ISIS has indirectly praised the Bondi attack. Security measures have been heightened at locations like the Lakemba mosque in Sydney.

At Bondi Beach, the Jewish community gathered for prayers, and swimmers and surfers formed a symbolic circle in the waters to honor the victims. The show of solidarity has been deeply appreciated by community leaders amidst concerns over rising antisemitic incidents in the country.
