BC Conservative Party Leader John Rustad Resigns

Date:

B.C. Conservative Party Leader John Rustad has made public his decision to resign from his leadership position, although he intends to stay on as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). This announcement follows the recent removal of Rustad as leader by the party’s board, a move that Rustad initially disputed.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Rustad shared that after consulting with his wife and close confidants, he chose not to engage in what he described as a potential internal conflict within the party. He expressed his disappointment but reiterated his commitment to the party and the province, urging the caucus to unite for progress despite any disparities.

Rustad affirmed that he will continue serving as an MLA to facilitate the party’s search for a new leader, although he clarified that he does not intend to run in the upcoming provincial election. The Conservative Caucus of B.C. declared their lack of confidence in Rustad on Wednesday, leading to his removal as the Official Opposition leader. This decision followed a period of unrest within the party, marked by several MLAs departing the caucus and mounting calls for Rustad’s resignation.

The party’s board cited Rustad’s alleged “professional incapacitation” as the grounds for his removal, one of the limited methods outlined in the Conservative Party’s constitution for ousting a leader. Despite securing nearly 71% support in a recent leadership review, Rustad faced internal challenges, culminating in the appointment of Trevor Halford as the interim leader following a caucus vote.

Addressing assertions of a leadership “takeover,” Rustad characterized the situation as a common occurrence in politics and emphasized his belief in the B.C. Conservatives’ potential to form the next government. Reflecting on his journey, Rustad recounted receiving a painted rock with the word “believe” during the 2024 election campaign, symbolizing his unwavering commitment to his political endeavors.

In an emotional address, Rustad recounted his experiences, from his expulsion from the B.C. Liberal party to advocating for policy changes as the official opposition leader. He expressed pride in the party’s accomplishments under his leadership and his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to its growth.
