Blue Jays Welcome Scherzer and Bassitt for ALCS Push

Date:

The American League Championship Series saw the return of Blue Jays pitchers Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt to the roster on Sunday, while shortstop Bo Bichette remained sidelined with a left knee sprain. Both teams unveiled their 26-man rosters ahead of Game 1 at Rogers Centre. Manager John Schneider indicated that Scherzer was set for a potential start or extended outing, with Bassitt primed for bullpen duties. Schneider emphasized the importance of having them available for critical moments in the game.

The Blue Jays revealed their pitching plans, with Trey Yesavage slated to start Game 2 and Shane Bieber scheduled for Game 3 in Seattle. Kevin Gausman took the mound for the opener, maintaining the same starting order from the division series triumph over the New York Yankees. Schneider hinted at Scherzer likely playing a role in Game 4.

Eight-time All-Star Scherzer posted a 5-5 record with a 5.19 ERA in 17 starts, facing setbacks due to a right thumb issue. Bassitt recorded an 11-9 record with a 3.96 ERA in 32 appearances, landing on the injured list in late September due to lower-back problems. Bichette’s return timeline remains uncertain as he continues his recovery from a knee injury suffered earlier in the season.

Despite Bichette’s absence, he has been actively involved in team activities, contributing insights and maintaining a positive presence. The Mariners made roster adjustments, adding Bryan Woo and Miles Mastrobuoni while omitting Luke Raley and Ben Williamson. Woo, an All-Star pitcher, has been sidelined due to pectoral inflammation since September. The Mariners arrived in Toronto after a grueling five-game series against Detroit.

The Blue Jays are aiming for their first ALCS victory since 2016 and seek to end their World Series drought dating back to 1993.
