“Bureau Probes Grocery Prices Amid Competition Concerns”

Date:

The Competition Bureau is initiating an inquiry into the impact of competition within the food supply chain on the pricing of groceries for Canadian consumers. The bureau will delve into three primary areas: production and processing, transportation and distribution, and retail pricing strategies. This comprehensive assessment aims to identify areas requiring intervention by the bureau and potential policy actions to enhance affordability.

Interim Commissioner of Competition, Jeanne Pratt, highlights the significance of food costs to all Canadians and emphasizes that robust competition can help regulate prices. Pratt also encourages industry stakeholders to provide their insights on the matter.

The ongoing investigation will build upon the findings of the bureau’s 2023 study on the retail grocery market, which indicated that increased competition could lead to price reductions and foster innovation. The final report, slated for publication next spring, will contain conclusions and recommendations for government entities on enhancing competition within the food supply chain.
