“Calgary’s Aerospace Sector Takes Off, Eyes Defense Market”

Date:

Calgary, often associated with oil and gas, has a burgeoning aerospace and defense sector that has largely gone unnoticed. The city is home to 158 companies in this industry, contributing $3.1 billion to the province’s GDP in 2024, according to Calgary Economic Development.

Jeff LaFrenz, president of VizWorX, a tech firm specializing in virtual reality software for military use, highlighted the overshadowing effect of the energy sector on aerospace developments. However, a recent initiative by Boeing, Ottawa, and Calgary Economic Development aims to accelerate the commercialization of Canadian defense technologies and assist local companies in securing new clients in the sector.

Calgary has witnessed a wave of aviation announcements this year, including WestJet’s significant aircraft order, Lufthansa Technik’s multi-billion dollar maintenance facility project, and CAE’s aviation training facility construction. De Havilland Canada is also set to establish a new aircraft manufacturing facility near the city.

Nicole Holinaty from HeavyAero emphasized the interconnectedness of commercial and defense aerospace sectors, emphasizing the challenges faced by companies looking to enter defense contracting. The hope is that the Boeing initiative will facilitate network expansion and innovation penetration into the defense market.

Despite the progress, the aerospace industry in Calgary faces a human resources challenge, with an aging workforce in need of replenishment. While Montreal remains Canada’s aerospace hub, Calgary is making strides in the sector. Further growth, however, hinges on the availability of skilled aerospace workers.

With Ottawa committing to increased defense spending and prioritizing Canadian industrial benefits, there is optimism for sectoral growth. LaFrenz believes that Alberta can emerge as a global aerospace and defense contender if the province unites around this opportunity.
