The match saw early controversy as Tajon Buchanan’s penalty claim was waved off by the referee. Australia adopted a defensive 5-4-1 formation, frustrating Canada’s attempts to break through. Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch praised his team’s efforts and strategic play, highlighting the positive attacking intent.
Ismael Kone came close to scoring before Australia had a clear chance through Alessandro Circati, who missed the target. The game intensified in the final 30 minutes with both teams seeking a winning goal. Australia’s substitutions provided a fresh impetus, leading to a more controlled game.
Australia capitalized on a defensive error to take the lead through Irankunda in the 71st minute. Despite Australia’s disruptive tactics, Canada’s resilience was evident through players like Richie Laryea. Canada pushed for an equalizer but failed to convert their chances, including a late opportunity for Jacob Shaffelburg.
Looking ahead, Canada will face Colombia in New Jersey on October 14, while Australia will take on the United States in Colorado on the same day.
