“Canada Strong Pass Sparks Record Park Visitation”

Date:

Lorne and Riza McVicar from Halifax eagerly embraced the Canada Strong Pass initiative by the federal government. The pass offers complimentary access to Canada’s national parks and a 25% discount on campsites from June 20 to Sept. 2. Marketed as a means for Canadians to explore their own country more conveniently, Lorne McVicar voiced concerns regarding the pass’s availability to all, including international tourists.

In their attempt to book a camping spot at New Brunswick’s Fundy National Park in July, the couple found all slots taken for that month, a situation replicated at Newfoundland and Labrador’s Gros Morne National Park. The unexpected high demand, possibly triggered by the Canada Strong Pass, left the McVicars disappointed.

Parks Canada indicated that precise attendance figures will be available at the end of the season but highlighted a trend of increased visitation over the past eight years, with this year expected to continue the pattern. The Canada Strong Pass has attracted a surge of visitors to popular parks, raising concerns about overcrowding.

Prince Edward Island National Park faced record visitation numbers and traffic congestion, prompting reminders to visitors to avoid walking on sand dunes for coastal protection. With the influx of visitors, park officials noted a rise in dune trespassing, potentially endangering the park’s ecosystem.

The heightened visitor traffic also led to congestion near renowned parks like Banff National Park. The town of Banff recorded a substantial increase in traffic volume, emphasizing the need for sustainable traffic management solutions. Similarly, at Waterton Lakes National Park, officials had to temporarily block entry due to excessive traffic.

Parks Canada responded to concerns, citing routine traffic diversions and fully booked campsites each year. However, recent reports highlighted increased camping crowds in July at certain parks, such as Gros Morne National Park and La Mauricie National Park.

The McVicars eventually secured their July camping trip after persistent checks for cancellations on Parks Canada’s reservations site. Despite the challenges of changing campsites multiple times, they managed to enjoy their vacation. They expressed disappointment with the altered experience but acknowledged the circumstances.
