Canadian figure skaters delivered strong performances in the short programs at the 2025 Finlandia Trophy, positioning themselves well to contend for podium finishes in every discipline. Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier secured the second spot with a score of 79.56 in the rhythm dance segment, skating to “Supermodel [You Better Work]” by RuPaul. They are closely behind the French duo of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, who lead with 79.89 points.
Fournier Beaudry, originally from Montreal, switched partners to Cizeron, the 2022 Olympic champion, after her previous partner, Nikolaj Sorensen, faced a now-reversed six-year suspension for misconduct. The new pairing triumphed at the Grand Prix de France in October.
In the men’s short program, Stephen Gogolev claimed the second position with 89.35 points, showcasing two quad jumps and a clean triple axel. The Toronto native, making a strong comeback from past injuries, outperformed Yuma Kagiyama of Japan, who settled for third place with 88.16 points. Adam Siao Him Fa, the European champion and world bronze medallist, leads the competition with 92.50 points.
Madeline Schizas, the three-time Canadian champion and a top contender for the women’s Olympic spot, secured third place in the short program with 65.16 points. The United States’ Amber Glenn leads with 75.72 points, followed by Japan’s Mone Chiba with 72.89.
In the pairs event, Canada’s Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud finished fourth with 70.13 points, remaining within striking distance of the podium in a tightly contested field. The German pair of Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin leads with 70.40 points.
The Finlandia Trophy marks the final event in the Grand Prix series and serves as the last opportunity for skaters to qualify for the Grand Prix Final, scheduled for Dec. 5-8 in Nagoya, Japan.
