Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson appeared relaxed just days before his wedding and upcoming movie shoot as he discussed his latest project, “Tony,” a biopic centered on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s iconic status and tragic passing in 2018, Johnson expressed comfort in portraying his story, mentioning he initially had no personal connection to Bourdain’s image or reputation.
The decision to create a film on Bourdain only came about after Johnson met actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. The duo found common ground in exploring themes of role models and adulthood, prompting Johnson to delve into Bourdain’s formative years as depicted in his book “Kitchen Confidential.” The narrative focuses on one summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain began his journey as a chef, steering clear of the pressure to portray the more established Bourdain that many fans idolize.
By concentrating on Bourdain’s early experiences, Johnson aimed to humanize the chef and make his story relatable to audiences. The film, featuring Sessa as the young Bourdain under the mentorship of a chef played by Antonio Banderas, delves into the complexities of Bourdain’s youth, including his relationships and self-perception entering adulthood. Johnson emphasized the collaborative effort between himself, Sessa, and Bourdain in bringing the story to life, creating a sense of connection among them.
“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on Friday, August 14, offering a unique perspective on the lesser-known aspects of Anthony Bourdain’s life.
