Canada’s Sophia Howell achieved her first podium finish at the World Triathlon Cup on Sunday, securing third place in the sprint-distance event. Hailing from Airdrie, Alberta, Howell completed the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride, and five-kilometer run in one hour, one minute, and 12 seconds in San Pedro de la Paz, Chile. Expressing her excitement, the 23-year-old athlete stated, “I’m so thrilled. I didn’t anticipate this today, so I’m extremely happy.” Howell finished just three seconds behind Jeanne Lehair of Luxembourg and nine seconds behind the champion, Miriam Casillas Garcia of Spain. Emy Legault from L’Ile Perrot, Quebec, finished in 12th place. In the men’s event, Martin Sobey from Charlottetown was the highest-ranking Canadian, finishing in 14th place.
