Controversy Erupts Over Canadian Screen Awards Rule

Date:

A recent regulation change at the Canadian Screen Awards has sparked controversy among filmmakers who rely on international collaborations and talent. The new rule restricts awards to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, affecting productions with non-Canadian leads, such as the highly acclaimed films “40 Acres,” “Heated Rivalry,” and “Mile End Kicks.”

Matthew Miller, a producer of “Mile End Kicks,” expressed disappointment that the lead actress, Barbie Ferreira from New York City, was ineligible for a nomination due to the updated criteria set by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. Miller emphasized the challenges of marketing films without the ability to showcase non-Canadian stars.

Despite the criticism, some industry professionals support the decision to prioritize homegrown talent, especially following threats of tariffs by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, creator of “North of North,” commended the focus on celebrating Canadian talent in the film industry.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is open to potential rule revisions in the future based on feedback. Louis Calabro, the vice-president of programming and awards, mentioned the importance of evaluating the impact of the new regulations before making further adjustments.

Filmmakers like R.T. Thorne, director of “40 Acres,” suggested the possibility of creating a special award category for international stars to recognize their contributions to Canadian productions. Calabro acknowledged the idea and highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue with the industry to shape future rules collaboratively.
