“Creditors Seek CFIA Help Amid Ostrich Farm Debt Dispute”

Date:

In southeastern B.C., creditors of a renowned ostrich farm are seeking assistance from the Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to recover significant debts following a prolonged legal battle. The CFIA is considering culling over 300 birds owned by Universal Ostrich Farms Inc. in Edgewood, B.C., due to the detection of avian flu among some birds last December.

Despite ongoing efforts by the farm to garner public support and donations to contest the cull through a federal court case, creditors allege that the farm’s owners have disregarded court orders to repay debts exceeding $250,000. Consequently, several creditors have taken legal action to garnish potential compensation from the CFIA if the cull proceeds, with more creditors planning to do the same.

The farm owners, Karen Espersen and Dave Bilinski, maintain that the financial disputes with creditors are distinct from the legal battle over the fate of the ostrich flock. The farm has raised funds through donations to cover legal expenses and care for the ostriches during quarantine, emphasizing transparency in fund allocation.

Legal battles with creditors, including Rudi George, Roman Stadler, and David Goranson, have shed light on Universal’s financial struggles. Disputes over unpaid debts related to ostrich supply deals and loans have led to court judgments against the farm. The CFIA’s involvement in the legal proceedings has raised concerns among creditors seeking compensation.

The financial woes of Universal Ostrich Farms have become central in the legal tussle with the CFIA, highlighting the potential economic losses the farm could face if the cull proceeds. The farm’s transition from ostrich sales to research activities has added complexity to the case, with creditors vying to recover their debts through legal means.

As the legal saga unfolds, creditors like Ariton Talica are pursuing garnisheeing orders against the CFIA to secure their outstanding payments from the ostrich farm. Talica’s experience highlights the financial entanglements between creditors and the farm, underscoring the complex web of disputes surrounding Universal Ostrich Farms’ operations.

In the midst of legal battles and financial challenges, the fate of the ostriches hangs in the balance, with creditors and farm owners locked in a contentious struggle over debts and compensation. The CFIA’s impending decision on the cull could have far-reaching implications for all parties involved, shaping the future of Universal Ostrich Farms and its creditors.
