“Deadly Inferno at Goa Nightclub Claims 25 Lives”

Date:

A deadly inferno devastated a well-liked nightclub in the Indian state of Goa, claiming the lives of 25 individuals, which included tourists, as reported by the state’s chief minister on Sunday. The tragic incident took place shortly after midnight in Arpora village in North Goa, an entertainment hotspot situated approximately 25 kilometers away from Panaji, the state capital.

According to Pramod Sawant, the Chief Minister of Goa, the majority of the deceased were employees working in the club’s kitchen, along with three to four tourists. Six individuals sustained injuries but are now in stable condition, with all the bodies having been recovered.

The fire was initiated by a gas cylinder explosion, and though it has been extinguished, witnesses indicated that it originated on the first floor of the club while around 100 tourists were dancing on the floor above. Amid the chaos, many rushed to the kitchen below and became trapped alongside the staff.

Fatima Shaikh recounted the chaotic scene that unfolded as flames erupted, mentioning that upon fleeing the club, they witnessed the entire structure engulfed in flames.

The nightclub, positioned along the Arpora River backwaters, faced challenges for firefighters due to its narrow entrance and exit. This forced them to park their tankers around 400 meters away, resulting in delays, as reported by the news agency.

Sawant revealed that the nightclub had breached fire safety regulations. Consequently, a thorough investigation has been launched by the state government to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and determine accountability. He emphasized that the authorities would take action against the club management and officials who permitted its operation despite the violations.

Roshan Redkar, a local village council official, mentioned that a demolition notice had been issued previously for the club, which lacked a government-issued construction permit. However, this order was rescinded by higher-ranking officials.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident in a social media post and confirmed speaking with Sawant. Modi assured that the government was extending all possible assistance, extending condolences to the families of the victims.

Accidents, particularly involving gas cylinders and electrical short circuits, are not uncommon in India and often lead to fatalities, underscoring the critical need for stringent safety measures to be enforced.

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent figure in India’s main opposition Congress party, condemned the incident, labeling it as a severe safety and governance failure. He called for a transparent investigation to assign responsibility and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Regarding international impact, Global Affairs Canada released a statement expressing condolences and confirming no known Canadian citizens were affected by the fire. The statement conveyed sympathy to all those impacted by the tragedy and the families of the victims.

Following the tragedy, authorities in Goa swiftly initiated an investigation and offered compensation to the victims. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident to determine causality and accountability, ensuring that the injured receive necessary medical attention.

Prime Minister Modi, in collaboration with Sawant, extended condolences to the grieving families. Modi pledged compensation of up to 200,000 rupees ($3,077 Cdn) to the families of each deceased victim and 50,000 rupees ($770 Cdn) to the injured.

Goa, situated on the western coast of India, is renowned as one of the country’s top tourist destinations, celebrated for its picturesque sandy beaches. Government statistics indicate that approximately 5.5 million tourists, including 271,000 international visitors, visited Goa in the first half of the year.
