Demon Hunter Sues Netflix Over “KPop Demon Hunters” Trademark Violation

Date:

Christian metal band Demon Hunter has taken legal action against Netflix for alleged trademark infringement related to the popular movie “KPop Demon Hunters.” Filed on August 18, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the lawsuit claims that the film’s title is too close to the band’s trademark, owned by Hyde Lane Inc., the parent company of Demon Hunter.

According to the complaint, the band, founded by brothers Ryan Clark and Don Clark in Seattle in 2000, has released 13 albums and achieved significant sales, including streaming numbers equivalent to one million albums. Their latest album, “There Was a Light Here,” was released in 2025.

Netflix’s movie “KPop Demon Hunters,” released in June 2025, tells the story of Huntrix, a K-pop girl group doubling as demon hunters. The film has become Netflix’s most-watched production, garnering over 325.1 million views by March.

Following the film’s release, Demon Hunter has reportedly faced confusion from individuals mistaking the band for characters in “KPop Demon Hunters.” Instances include a ticket refund request for a concert under the misconception that it was for the movie’s show.

Moreover, the complaint mentions a mix-up involving a producer from “Inside Edition” contacting Demon Hunter about interviewing a songwriter, Yu Han Lee, who won an Oscar for a song featured in “KPop Demon Hunters.” The band’s legal representative, John Tehranian, declined to provide a comment on the matter.

In response, Netflix has stated its intention to contest the lawsuit, asserting that the claims lack merit. The company emphasized the global success of “KPop Demon Hunters” and its impact on fans worldwide, pledging to vigorously defend against the allegations.
