“Dismantled Dam Revives St. Croix River Fish Population”

Date:

After the removal of a hydroelectric dam two years ago, conservationists are observing an increase in the number of alewife and blueback herring returning to the St. Croix River. The river, also known as Skutik, flows through the southwest New Brunswick town of St. Stephen and was previously home to the Milltown Dam.

Efforts led by conservationists led to the removal of the dam, restoring the river’s natural flow. Alexa Meyer from the Passamaquoddy Recognition Group, representing the Peskotomuhkati Nation, expressed joy at witnessing the river coming back to life. She mentioned that the fish population in the river has grown to over one million, compared to the previous count of 800,000. Meyer emphasized that the estimated ideal fish population in the river ranges between 50 to 100 million.

The removal of the Milltown Dam, which had stood for about 140 years, signifies a significant moment for the Peskotomuhkati Nation as it marks a return to a once-thriving cultural and social hub for the community.

Matt Abbott from the Conservation Council of New Brunswick has been facilitating discussions at the river to share its history and foster personal connections with it. Abbott highlighted the cultural and social damage caused by the dam’s presence and the subsequent decline in the river’s ecosystem. The storytelling sessions aim to reignite people’s sense of belonging and connection to the river without the dam.

Residents like Peter Brown from St. Stephen are joining in the storytelling sessions to reminisce about their experiences on the river and imagine a future without the dam. While some expressed concerns about losing a piece of heritage with the dam’s removal, Abbott reassured that the sessions are essential in reaffirming people’s connection to the river and encouraging ongoing support and protection for its restoration.

The removal of the dam signals a new chapter in the cultural restoration of the St. Croix River, with hopes for continued community engagement and preservation efforts.
