“Disney+ Announces Price Hike for Canadian Streaming Subscriptions”

Date:

Disney+ is implementing a price increase for its streaming packages in Canada, set to take effect in November. The monthly cost of the commercial-free streaming options will see a rise of up to $3. The standard high-definition subscription will increase to $15.99 per month, while the premium 4K package will be priced at $16.99 per month.

Meanwhile, the standard subscription with ad breaks will remain at $8.99 a month. Similar price adjustments are being introduced by Disney+ in various regions, including the United States and the United Kingdom.

This move aligns with a trend among streaming services to promote ad-supported options, which offer lower subscription fees while generating additional revenue through advertisements. The last price hike for Canadian subscriptions by Disney+ occurred approximately two years ago, while other platforms like Netflix and Apple TV Plus have also raised their prices this year.

In a separate development, Disney+ is transitioning from its Star branding to Hulu in all international markets, including Canada. Disney assures that this change will not impact its content selection but aims to bring Disney+ Canada more in line with the U.S. and global markets.

Recent events have brought attention to Disney+, with a public boycott leading some subscribers to cancel their memberships due to Disney’s handling of the Jimmy Kimmel controversy. In September, ABC, a network owned by Disney, suspended Kimmel following comments he made about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination, sparking debates on freedom of speech.
