Disney has appointed Josh D’Amaro, who currently leads the company’s theme parks, cruises, and resorts, as the new CEO to succeed Bob Iger. D’Amaro, set to become the ninth CEO in the company’s history, has been instrumental in the success of Disney’s experiences division, generating $36 billion in annual revenue and employing 185,000 individuals globally.
Taking the helm at a time when Disney is enjoying box office hits like “Zootopia 2” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” along with a thriving streaming business, D’Amaro faces challenges in the entertainment industry. The sector is navigating issues such as the impact of generative AI, the consolidation of streaming platforms, and concerns about government intervention in entertainment companies’ operations.
This leadership transition comes after a previous unsuccessful attempt to replace Iger, who had to return to the role due to clashes and financial setbacks under his chosen successor, Bob Chapek. Disney conducted a detailed search for the new CEO, starting in 2024 with the assistance of Gorman, a former executive chair at Morgan Stanley. Iger will continue as a senior advisor and board member until his retirement at the end of the year.
Against the backdrop of industry scrutiny, Disney faced controversies, including the decision to pull “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following comments by the host that drew backlash from various parties. The move raised concerns about potential government influence on entertainment content. Other media companies, like Paramount and ABC News, also encountered challenges related to political pressures and regulatory issues.
Internal candidates, D’Amaro and Dana Walden, emerged as leading contenders for the CEO role. D’Amaro, a long-time Disney executive, has spearheaded major investments in the company’s theme parks and licensing business. Walden, previously co-chair of Disney Entertainment, will now serve as the chief creative officer reporting to D’Amaro. Their appointments are effective from March 18, marking a new chapter for Disney’s top leadership.
