Dog Teams Fail to Find Missing Children in Nova Scotia

Date:

RCMP stated on Wednesday that dogs specially trained to detect human remains were unsuccessful in locating Lilly and Jack Sullivan, who have been missing for over five months in rural Nova Scotia. The children, aged 6 and 4, were reported missing on May 2 after their mother contacted the police, reporting that they had wandered off from their home in Lansdowne, a sparsely populated area in Pictou County, around 140 kilometers northeast of Halifax.

Two dog teams from British Columbia covered a total distance of 40 kilometers over three days in late September. Insp. Luke Rettie with his dog, Narc, and Sgt. Dave Whalen with his dog, Kitt, conducted searches in the vicinity where the children disappeared, as well as in areas where a pink blanket had previously been discovered.

Despite focusing on areas with the highest likelihood of finding the children, the search yielded no results. Staff Sgt. Rob McCamon emphasized that while the dogs did not locate the children, it does not rule out the possibility of human remains in those areas.

Following the children’s disappearance, an extensive search operation covering 8.5 square kilometers of dense woods involved approximately 160 ground search and rescue volunteers, service dogs, drones, and helicopters.

The case’s mysterious nature, coupled with the lack of answers, has attracted global attention. The Northeast Nova major crime unit continues to pursue leads from over 860 tips, 8,060 video files reviewed, and forensic examinations. Various units have been dedicated to the case since May under the Missing Persons Act.

McCamon reiterated the importance of public tips, emphasizing that even seemingly insignificant information could be crucial to the investigation. He assured that all leads would be thoroughly assessed for their significance and followed up accordingly.

While exploring all possibilities, RCMP refrained from disclosing specific investigative theories. McCamon stressed their continuous efforts in the case, stating they would persist until they find answers.

Regarding the unsuccessful search, McCamon mentioned the possibility of recalling the dog teams if new information or evidence warranted their involvement.

Daniel Martell, the children’s stepfather, shared details of the search conducted by dog teams around the property and inside the house during the week of Sept. 22.

Martell expressed his cooperation with the search efforts, highlighting that he regularly liaises with the police for updates on the case. While he did not confirm being questioned by a dog handler, McCamon acknowledged that handlers might engage with individuals in specific circumstances.

Grandmother’s Perspective

Belynda Gray, the children’s paternal grandmother, expressed lack of surprise at the search outcome, acknowledging her concerns about the possibility of never finding the children.

Gray advocated for expanding the search to vehicles in the Lansdowne area and homes beyond Pictou County. She questioned the progress made in the investigation five months post the children’s disappearance.

While commending the investigators’ efforts, Gray stressed the urgency of the situation as time passes without resolution.
