Meyers Taylor, a 41-year-old American bobsledder and mother of two children with special needs, overcame career challenges, including concussions and doubts, to achieve her first Olympic title. This victory marked her sixth career medal and a historic moment as the oldest American woman to win gold at the Winter Games, with a time of three minutes 57.93 seconds.
Laura Nolte of Germany, who led the first three runs, claimed the silver, while Kaillie Humphries Armbruster of the United States secured the bronze. Humphries Armbruster, a former Canadian Olympian, made history at the Beijing 2022 Games by becoming the first woman to win Olympic gold for two different countries. This medal was her fifth, making her the first woman over 40 to earn an Olympic bobsled medal.
Both Meyers Taylor and Humphries Armbruster have maintained a perfect record of winning medals in all their previous Olympic appearances. The Canadian bobsled team, using 2018 hand-me-down sleds from Germany, faced challenges leading up to the Milano-Cortina Olympics, with changes in funding and increased team fees. Despite this, Canadian bobsledders have consistently medaled at every Games since 2006.
In the two-man bobsleigh event, Germany dominated the first two heats, with Canada’s top sled finishing in 15th place. The competition continues with heats 3 and 4 scheduled for the following day. The Canadian team’s revised goals for the Milano-Cortina Olympics emphasized process over results, reflecting a shift in focus for the competitors.
