Ford Vows to Fight for Stellantis Plant in Brampton

Date:

Premier Doug Ford has expressed his determination to advocate for the retention of Stellantis’ assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, and uphold the commitments made to its workforce, following the automaker’s announcement to shift Jeep production from the plant to the United States. Ford, speaking at an unrelated press briefing, voiced his disappointment over the decision, citing previous assurances from Stellantis Canada president Jeff Hines regarding the plant’s future. This development is part of Stellantis’ $13 billion plan unveiled on Tuesday to boost U.S. production by 50% over the next four years.

Ford emphasized the significance of the automotive industry in Ontario and pledged to exert maximum effort to preserve the Brampton facility, asserting that Ontario can excel in vehicle manufacturing globally. Concurrently, the federal government, through Industry Minister Melanie Joly, has issued a stern warning to Stellantis, expressing deep concern over the decision and demanding adherence to obligations stemming from substantial financial support provided to the company over the years.

The issue of provincial funding for the plant has also surfaced, with Ford clarifying that no provincial funding has been disbursed to Stellantis for the Brampton project to date. The premier underscored that funding is contingent on the resumption of plant operations. Similarly, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown labeled the move as a significant blow to the community, highlighting prior investments made by the province and Ottawa to enhance Stellantis facilities.

Prime Minister Mark Carney attributed the shift in production to U.S. tariffs and affirmed the government’s commitment to collaborate with Stellantis to explore alternative opportunities in Brampton. Amidst these developments, Unifor’s national president Lana Payne urged the federal government to safeguard Canadian auto sector jobs and prioritize the preservation of the Brampton Assembly plant.

Stellantis, while enacting changes at the Brampton plant, continues to engage in discussions with the Canadian government regarding the plant’s future. The company has reaffirmed its commitment to Canada, including the expansion of operations at the Windsor Assembly Plant. The situation has sparked political reactions, with various officials and parties expressing concerns over the impact of the decision on workers and the auto industry in Canada.
