Date:

Nick Mangold, widely recognized for his distinctive long, blond hair and bushy beard, was a standout player for the New York Jets. The team announced on Sunday that Mangold, a two-time first-team All-Pro center who played a crucial role in leading the Jets to two AFC championship games, passed away at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease.

Mangold had disclosed his battle with kidney disease on social media less than two weeks ago, revealing the need for a transplant due to a genetic defect diagnosed in 2006 that led to chronic kidney disease. Despite being on dialysis while waiting for a transplant, he remained optimistic about his recovery and future health.

Jets owner Woody Johnson praised Mangold not only for his on-field excellence but also for his leadership and toughness that left a lasting impact on the team. Mangold’s dedication to the Jets was evident throughout his 11-season career, where he played an integral role in the team’s offensive line.

The news of Mangold’s passing was shared by the Jets shortly before their game against the Cincinnati Bengals, where a moment of silence was observed in his honor. Mangold’s former teammates and coaches paid tribute to his legacy, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the team and his remarkable leadership qualities.

Mangold, a first-round draft pick in 2006, earned seven Pro Bowl selections during his career and was a pivotal figure in the Jets’ success on the field. His impact extended beyond football, as he remained active in charitable endeavors and was known for his warm personality and sense of humor off the field.

Survived by his wife, Jennifer, and their four children, Mangold leaves behind a legacy of excellence, resilience, and camaraderie that will be cherished by fans, teammates, and the football community at large. His contributions to the sport and his enduring spirit will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
