Former Undercover Informant Sues RCMP for Mistreatment

Date:

A former undercover police informant is taking legal action against the federal government and the RCMP, alleging mistreatment during his time as an underage operative in the Maritimes. Paul Derry, who commenced his undercover work at 15, claims to have infiltrated a child sex ring in Moncton at the age of 17.

Over four decades later, Derry has initiated a civil lawsuit citing the abuse he endured while assisting law enforcement. He has expressed bewilderment at the decision to involve a minor in such operations, questioning the rationale behind utilizing individuals of his age for such tasks.

In his lawsuit, Derry explicitly accuses the RCMP of knowingly exposing him to situations where he would face molestation as a minor. The RCMP declined to provide specific comments on the matter due to ongoing legal proceedings.

Although seeking damages through the lawsuit, Derry acknowledges the arduous nature of legal processes and the limited financial outcomes. He emphasizes that his pursuit of justice is driven not solely by monetary compensation but by a desire to prevent similar exploitation of vulnerable individuals in the future.

Derry, whose undercover endeavors resulted in numerous convictions, including those of Hells Angels hitmen, faced death threats as a consequence of his work and spent years under witness protection. Despite the challenges, he remains resolute in his pursuit of justice, even if it means confronting additional hurdles such as a change in the lawsuit venue.

Reflecting on the toll the legal battle has taken on him and his family, Derry contemplates the lasting impact of his actions on future generations. While acknowledging the strain of the ongoing fight for justice, he remains committed to seeing it through, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in the system.

It is essential to note that the allegations made by Derry have yet to undergo legal scrutiny in court.
