“Gaza Health Ministry Receives 54 Bodies from Israel”

Date:

In a surprising development on Wednesday, the Gaza Health Ministry announced that it had received 54 bodies of unknown individuals from Israel, along with 66 boxes containing the remains of Palestinians who are believed to have died during the two-year conflict with Hamas. Health officials in Gaza have commenced the process of identifying these remains.

Mu’in Al-Wahidi, who heads the special committee handling body transfers at Al-Shifa Hospital, confirmed the reception of these bodies and remains late on Wednesday. He stated that they had received intact bodies and human remains in sealed boxes, which will undergo forensic examination the following day.

The health officials in Gaza disclosed that they have no information regarding the circumstances or locations of the deaths, nor any identifying details about the deceased individuals. They clarified that the transfer of remains from Israel to Gaza was not part of any truce agreement or a swap for the bodies of Israeli hostages.

Earlier, Israeli authorities had released the bodies of 15 unidentified Palestinians in what was described as the final exchange between Israel and Hamas under the initial phase of a ceasefire plan brokered by the United States. This exchange occurred shortly after Israeli forces recovered the remains of Ran Gvili, the last hostage held by Hamas for over 840 days following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

The transfer of 54 bodies from Israel to Gaza on Wednesday brings the total number of bodies released by Israel since the start of the ceasefire deal on October 10, 2024, to 414. The repatriation of Palestinians killed in the conflict was a key provision of the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement signed in October last year.

Amani Al-Naouq, a spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, confirmed that the ICRC facilitated the transfer of bodies on Wednesday. She noted the challenging task faced by forensic authorities in identifying these remains due to limited resources and the large number of missing individuals in Gaza.

The transfer of bodies occurred amid escalating violence in Gaza, with Israeli tank shelling and airstrikes resulting in the deaths of 24 Palestinians, including seven children and a medic. The Israeli military attributed these strikes to retaliatory actions against militants who had fired upon Israeli troops near the armistice line with Hamas, citing a breach of the ceasefire agreement.
