Gaza Struggles to Restore Electricity Amid Post-Conflict Challenges

Date:

As night falls near Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City, the Abu Naji family gathers in their tent, relying on a small fire for light and warmth. The quietness of the night, punctuated by crickets and crackling flames, is a stark departure from the usual sounds of war they have grown accustomed to over the past two years.

Shrouq Abu Naji, speaking to CBC freelance videographer Mohamed El Saife, laments the lack of electricity for years, a situation exacerbated by the Israeli government’s decision to cut off essential supplies, including electricity, water, food, and fuel to Gaza after recent conflict with Hamas.

In the aftermath of the conflict, efforts are underway to restore power in Gaza. The Abu Naji family, residing in a heavily bombed area, still relies on a fire for basic necessities like heating water for tea and lentils, providing a semblance of normalcy amid the turmoil.

In central Gaza, the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company faces challenges in restoring electricity due to damaged power lines and limited access to necessary equipment. Despite these obstacles, crews are diligently working to repair infrastructure and bring back vital services to the region.

Yasen Suwaihli supervises the maintenance work on power lines in central Gaza, emphasizing the importance of restoring electricity for the well-being of civilians in the area. While facing logistical hurdles and equipment shortages, the teams remain committed to the task at hand.

The Gaza Electricity Distribution Company is awaiting additional equipment to expedite the restoration process, with plans to address the significant damage to power poles and infrastructure caused by the conflict. Despite the hardships, the teams are determined to overcome challenges and restore electricity to the Gaza Strip for the benefit of its residents.

As Abu Naji tucks her children into bed amidst the fading firelight, her primary concern is securing a better future for them. Despite the hardships endured, she remains hopeful for support and opportunities for her children, emphasizing the critical role of electricity in ensuring essential services like clean water, food, healthcare, and economic recovery in the region.
