“Hurricane Melissa Leaves Trail of Devastation in Jamaica, Haiti”

Date:

The death toll from Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica has climbed to 45, and 15 individuals are still missing, as per officials’ latest report on Tuesday. Authorities anticipate the number of casualties to increase as they work to access two isolated towns following the devastating Category 5 storm that hit western Jamaica on October 28.

Efforts are underway to deliver essential supplies to the inaccessible communities via helicopters, mentioned Alvin Gayle, the director general of Jamaica’s emergency management office. The storm has resulted in the displacement of 30,000 households, with 1,100 individuals currently residing in 88 operational emergency shelters.

Despite ongoing debris clearance, approximately 35 roadways remain obstructed. Officials have indicated that half of the mobile service customers are now reconnected, and over 70% have access to water. Power has been restored to over 60% of customers, with the Montego Bay international airport regaining electricity on Tuesday.

Hugh Grant, the president and CEO of Jamaica’s power company, commended the progress made in power restoration, considering the extensive damage caused by the hurricane. Hurricane Melissa, known as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes, inflicted severe damage in Jamaica before moving on to eastern Cuba, causing destruction to properties and agricultural lands.

The storm also triggered significant flooding in southwestern Haiti, resulting in at least 43 confirmed deaths. Relief efforts are underway in the affected regions, with the U.S. government pledging additional financial aid. Jamaica is set to receive $10 million USD, while Haiti will benefit from $2.5 million USD, bringing the total aid package to nearly $37 million USD for the impacted nations, including Cuba and the Bahamas.
