Last week, two NGO vehicles maneuvered through the destroyed terrain of northern Gaza until they reached an open space close to the Mediterranean Sea. A cameraman deployed a drone to capture footage of a nearby refugee camp.
Shortly after, an Israeli airstrike targeted the vehicle, witnesses reported, reducing it to a mangled wreckage. Three freelance photojournalists lost their lives, adding to the growing number of Palestinian journalists killed during the conflict in Gaza by Israel.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has labeled the region as the deadliest for journalists in recent times, surpassing any other conflict globally, according to Jodie Ginsberg from the organization.
The Israeli military, in a media statement regarding the recent fatalities, claimed to have targeted individuals deemed a threat to its personnel. The military accused them of operating a drone linked to Hamas, without providing substantiated evidence of ties to the militant group.

‘Journalists face significant dangers’
The funeral for the three journalists – Mohammed Salah Qashta, 36, Abdul Raouf Sha’at, 34, and Anas Ghneim, 25 – evoked deep emotions among numerous Palestinian media professionals. They have mourned similar losses before, escorting bodies draped in white with each victim’s press vest inscribed “PRESS.”
With limited access for international media in Gaza due to Israeli restrictions, local freelance journalists have borne the brunt of reporting. Many of them collaborate with global media outlets, including CBC News.

“We encounter significant risks here, often without warning,” expressed journalist Ahmed al-Batta.
Shams Shana’a, one of the mourners, echoed his colleague’s sentiments.
“As a journalist, I fear going out to film,” he stated. “I am anxious that the Israelis might target me as they aim to conceal their actions from the world.”
