Jonathan David Named CONCACAF Men’s Player of the Year

Date:

Canadian forward Jonathan David has been crowned the CONCACAF men’s player of the year for the 2024-25 season. This recognition comes as a result of his outstanding performances both at the club level with Juventus and on the international stage, making him the second Canadian male player to achieve this honor after Alphonso Davies, who has won the award twice.

Having previously been nominated for the CONCACAF award in 2021, 2022, and 2023-24, David’s accolades also include being named the Canada Soccer player of the year in 2019 and 2024. On the women’s side, Haiti’s Melchie Dumornay, who plays for OL Lyonnes in France, clinched the CONCACAF women’s player of the year award for the second consecutive year.

The selection process for these prestigious awards, covering the period from August 2024 to July 2025, involved votes from players and coaches of CONCACAF member associations, as well as input from media and fans. With 37 goals in 67 appearances, David holds the title of Canada’s all-time leading scorer in men’s football.

CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani, who is also a FIFA vice-president, commended Jonathan and Melchie on their exceptional achievements during the past season, emphasizing their contributions at both national and club levels across significant competitions.

In his club endeavors, David notably netted seven goals in the Champions League for Lille, setting a record as the top-scoring CONCACAF player in a single edition of the tournament in this century. Additionally, he became Lille’s highest scorer in European competitions before making a transfer to Juventus in July. Although he has faced challenges finding the back of the net with Juventus, David managed one goal and one assist in 13 appearances for the renowned Italian club.

Among the other male nominees were Edson Alvarez from Mexico, Raul Jimenez from Mexico, Angel Sepulveda from Mexico, Malik Tillman from the United States, and Manfred Ugalde from Costa Rica. Dumornay’s repeat win makes her only the second woman, alongside American Alex Morgan, to secure the CONCACAF player of the year award more than once.

Furthermore, Dumornay was recognized for her exceptional performance by being named the UEFA Women’s Champions League young player of the season for the second consecutive year and earning a spot in the competition’s Best XI. She played a pivotal role in her French club’s league title victory, finishing as the second-highest scorer in the league with 15 goals.

The award for the goal of the year went to Jimenez for his free kick against Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League Finals. Fans voted for this remarkable goal, with Jimenez standing out for his stellar performance, including scoring both goals in Mexico’s 2-0 semifinal win over Canada and adding two more in the final against Panama. The exciting goal competition also featured nominations for goals by Christine Sinclair and Sebastian Berhalter.

Overall, the 2024-25 season has been marked by exceptional achievements and outstanding performances from these talented players, showcasing the high level of competition and skill within the CONCACAF region.
