Judge Blocks Trump’s Worker Firings Amid Shutdown

Date:

A federal judge in San Francisco has issued an emergency order directing the U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to halt the firing of workers during the ongoing government shutdown. The decision comes after federal agencies initiated layoff notices aimed at reducing the federal government’s size as part of efforts by the Republican administration to increase pressure on Democratic lawmakers.

Judge Susan Illston criticized the administration for its hasty actions, stating that the decisions lacked proper consideration and were resulting in a human cost that is unacceptable. Concurrently, Trump has extended the ban on hiring new federal employees, with certain exceptions, through an executive order released by the White House.

In a separate directive, Trump has instructed Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth to ensure that active-duty U.S. military personnel receive their pay on Oct. 15, despite the shutdown. The president authorized the use of available funds appropriated by Congress for military pay and allowances.

Moreover, the government shutdown is causing delays in announcing the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, originally scheduled for Wednesday. Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought revealed plans for additional workforce cuts, known as reductions-in-force plans, as long as the shutdown continues, emphasizing the importance of fiscal responsibility.

A U.S. airline trade group has raised concerns about the escalating pressure faced by air traffic controllers working without pay due to the shutdown. The CEO of Airlines for America highlighted the increasing risks posed by the situation and urged for a swift resolution to prevent adverse impacts on aviation operations.

Amid mounting concerns over the shutdown’s effects on air traffic control, aviation groups are calling for an end to the standoff to prevent disruptions and ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel. The continued shutdown has led to thousands of delays and financial uncertainties for air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration officers, underscoring the need for a prompt resolution.
