Sherrone Moore is currently in custody as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding his arrest shortly after being terminated from his coaching position at the University of Michigan due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The police have not disclosed specific details about Moore’s arrest but have confirmed that he is being held in the Washtenaw County Jail since Wednesday evening.
Following a report of an alleged assault in Pittsfield Township, near Michigan Stadium, law enforcement detained an individual without naming them, although it was in response to media inquiries regarding Moore. The police department later updated that the suspect will face arraignment on Friday.
The University of Michigan cited evidence of Moore’s improper relationship as grounds for his dismissal, stating that such behavior violates university policy with a zero-tolerance stance, according to athletic director Warde Manuel. The university did not provide specifics about the nature of the alleged relationship, and Moore, who is married with three children, did not respond to requests for comment.
Reportedly, the incident leading to Moore’s termination occurred just before the university publicly announced his firing. Moore, who had a successful coaching record of 9-3 this season following an 8-5 debut, had signed a substantial five-year contract in September 2024 with an annual salary of $5.5 million USD. Due to his dismissal for cause, the university will not be required to buy out the remaining years of his contract.
The Michigan Wolverines, currently ranked 18th, are scheduled to face the 14th-ranked Texas team in the Citrus Bowl on December 31, with Biff Poggi stepping in as the interim coach. Moore, initially hired as a tight ends coach in 2018 by Jim Harbaugh, climbed the ranks within the Wolverines’ coaching staff and assumed the lead role after the 2023 national championship win, as Harbaugh transitioned to the NFL.
This incident marks the state’s second major scandal involving its prominent public universities in recent years, following Michigan State’s firing of coach Mel Tucker for engaging in what he described as consensual phone sex with an activist and rape survivor in the 2023 season.
