“Mississauga Food Influencer Braves Fiery Chicken Trail”

Date:

Aashim Aggarwal recently embarked on a gastronomic adventure in Mississauga, Ontario, where he sampled some of the city’s most fiery chicken dishes. Recounting his experience, Aggarwal, aged 27, shared with CBC Radio’s Cost of Living that the spiciness of the dishes escalated with each one, culminating in one that was too hot to eat. He described how his mouth felt ablaze, prompting him to dash around the parking lot, attracting concerned onlookers from nearby cars.

An online influencer and “food storyteller” with a substantial following of 64,000 on Instagram, Aggarwal explored five locations along Mississauga’s Lava Chicken Trail as part of a sponsored collaboration with the City of Mississauga. This culinary journey aligned with the Minecraft Experience event at Square One Shopping Centre. Notably, the Lava Chicken Trail is associated with the song Steve’s Lava Chicken from the movie A Minecraft Movie.

While spicy cuisine has a long history predating the latest entertainment tie-ins, Aggarwal noted a rising trend of spicy offerings in Toronto’s dining scene, whether as permanent menu items or limited-time specials. He challenged the notion that any major restaurant chain or fast-food establishment doesn’t feature a spicy dish on their menu, emphasizing the widespread popularity of fiery flavors among customers.

According to market experts, the surge in spicy food options is largely attributable to the preferences of a young and culturally diverse clientele seeking capsicum-infused dishes. This trend has prompted restaurants and fast-food chains to innovate by incorporating hot sauces into traditional recipes to revitalize their menus quickly and affordably.

Claire Conaghan, a trendologist at Datassential, a food data firm based in Chicago, highlighted that fast-food outlets in the United States introduced over 75 new spicy items in the past spring alone. The firm’s report revealed that approximately 95% of U.S. eateries now offer at least one spicy menu item, up from 91% in 2015, with an increasing number featuring multiple spicy options.

The appeal of spicy dishes has seen a significant increase in consumer interest, with the “purchase intent” for such items rising from 44% in 2016 to 51% in 2025, as reported by Datassential. Major fast-food chains like McDonald’s and A&W have joined the trend by introducing spicy variations of their popular menu items to cater to the growing demand for fiery flavors.

Beyond mainstream brands, collaborations such as Wendy’s Takis Fuego meal and Popeyes x Hot Ones partnership have further fueled the spicy food craze, offering unique and bold flavor combinations to entice customers. Lisa Mazurkewich, Popeyes Canada’s marketing head, humorously remarked on Canadians’ affinity for spicy foods in a recent press release.

Sara Hamdy, a research analyst at Restaurants Canada, noted the appeal of limited-time spicy specials in attracting younger generations who seek memorable dining experiences. She highlighted the importance of creating shareable moments for millennials and Gen Z diners, who value engaging and visually appealing culinary offerings.

Adam Brown, the founder of No Refund Hot Sauce, observed a shift in Canadians’ palates towards embracing spicier and more diverse flavors, attributing this change to exposure to multicultural cuisines. He emphasized the evolving preferences of younger Canadians who seek flavorful and adventurous dining experiences beyond traditional fare.

The multicultural influence on food preferences has led to a growing interest in diverse spice profiles and international flavors, with a focus on savoring a variety of tastes rather than solely pursuing extreme heat levels. This trend underscores a broader appreciation for global culinary traditions and the exploration of new and exciting flavor combinations.

Despite his daring feat of indulging in Mississauga’s spiciest offerings, Aggarwal acknowledged the toll of consuming such fiery fare consecutively. Reflecting on his experience, he mentioned opting for milder options to allow his palate to recuperate from the intense spice overload endured during his spicy food escapade.
