Ads promoting a documentary that scrutinizes the actions of controversial billionaire Elon Musk were initially prohibited on TikTok and X but have since been allowed to run on YouTube and Meta’s social media platforms. The documentary, titled “Musk,” released its trailer last Thursday in anticipation of its theatrical premiere on October 9.
According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter on Friday, indie distributor Bleecker Street faced rejection from all four platforms when attempting to purchase ads for the film. While YouTube, TikTok, and Meta cited “political content” as the reason for the rejection, X, owned by Musk, did not provide any comment.
Following online criticism, YouTube announced on Saturday that the ads for “Musk” are now permitted on the platform. The platform stated that the ad had initially faced temporary restrictions but was ultimately approved after review.
A Meta spokesperson informed CBC News on Monday that the ads were mistakenly rejected and have now been reinstated. Bleecker Street, TikTok, and X did not respond to requests for comments.
TikTok does not allow paid political ads, while Meta imposes restrictions on them in certain regions like the European Union. YouTube permits political ads with transparency disclosures, and X allows them in specific regions, including the U.S.
Elon Musk gained significant political attention when he supported Donald Trump’s re-election campaign in 2024 and later served in his administration. Despite leaving the administration, Musk remains a divisive figure known for his outspoken views.
The documentary delves into allegations that Musk, the wealthiest individual globally, has sought to influence online discourse, including through his acquisition of Twitter, now X, and claims that his Starlink satellites may have been used to sway the 2024 election improperly.
Director Alex Gibney expressed relief after YouTube and Meta reversed their decision to block the ads, stating that public pressure played a crucial role in the reversal. The film, which Musk has labeled a “hit piece,” has received positive reviews from critics.
In a separate development, a film focusing on another tech mogul, Mark Zuckerberg, titled “The Social Reckoning,” is set to be released by Sony next month.
