Think your vote doesn’t matter? Think again. Just ask Michelle Backhouse and Allan Buckingham. The final seat on Banff council came down to a single vote, with Backhouse edging out Buckingham by a slim margin of 742 to 741.
Initially, Backhouse was ahead by two votes on election night, but a recount revealed the razor-thin difference. Backhouse attributed her ability to handle the pressure to her experience as a firefighter, stating, “I’ve been taught to manage stress, and the outcome will be the best it can be.”
For Buckingham, who was running for council for the third time, the close outcome was unexpected. Reflecting on the campaign, Buckingham expressed surprise at the tight margin, emphasizing the importance of every vote. Despite feeling optimistic during the campaign, he fell just short of securing the council seat.
Both candidates agreed that there was no room for second-guessing their campaign efforts. Buckingham noted the challenges of gauging campaign progress without the polling data available in larger cities.
While Buckingham had the option to seek a judicial review, he deemed the recount sufficient for a final result. Reflecting on the rarity of a one-vote difference, political scientist Jack Lucas highlighted the infrequency of such outcomes in municipal elections.
In the broader context, close election results are not uncommon, yet they remain exceedingly rare. Research in political science suggests that the impact of an individual vote on an election outcome is typically perceived as minuscule. Nevertheless, instances like this one serve as a reminder of the significance of each vote.
Voter turnout in the Bow Valley has historically been below 50%, with a gradual decline observed in recent municipal elections. The 2025 vote in Banff drew 1,786 voters out of a potential 4,588, marking a turnout of approximately 39%. This declining trend in voter participation raises concerns among community leaders like Leslie Taylor, emphasizing the critical impact that each vote can have on shaping the future of the community.
