A private aircraft crashed during an attempted return to a North Carolina airport shortly after takeoff, resulting in the tragic deaths of all seven individuals on board, including retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family, as confirmed by authorities. The Cessna C550 caught fire upon impact after departing from Statesville Regional Airport, located approximately 72 kilometers north of Charlotte, before encountering the fatal crash during its attempted return, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Flight records indicated that the aircraft was registered to a company associated with Biffle. The circumstances leading to the crash and the decision to return to the airport amidst drizzly and cloudy weather conditions were not immediately discerned.

The passengers onboard included Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their children Ryder, aged 5, and Emma, aged 14, as reported by the highway patrol and a family statement. The other individuals on the ill-fated flight were identified as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.

In a collective family statement, it was expressed that each individual held immense significance, leaving an irreplaceable void in their lives. Biffle, aged 55, had a successful racing career, securing over 50 victories in NASCAR across various circuits and championships in the Trucks Series in 2000 and the Xfinity Series in 2002.

The NASCAR community mourned the loss, acknowledging Biffle not only as a champion driver but as a cherished member known for his competitive spirit and camaraderie with others in the sport. The aircraft, en route to Florida, departed from Statesville airport in the morning, with golfers at Lakewood Golf Club witnessing the tragedy unfold as the plane descended, causing them to react with shock and concern.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are conducting investigations into the incident. In a tribute to Biffle’s humanitarian efforts, he was honored in 2024 for his contributions following Hurricane Helene, showcasing his dedication to aiding communities in need during times of crisis.

Statements from Rep. Richard Hudson and roommate Benito Howell highlighted the compassionate nature of Biffle, Wadsworth, and others on board, emphasizing their commitment to assisting others and their significant impact on those around them. The joint family statement expressed deep sorrow for the loss of Dutton and his son Jack, underscoring their widespread impact and the love they shared with those close to them.
