Kelsey Mitchell, an Olympic gold medalist in track cycling, is embracing her potential in a new sport after being praised for her abilities during a spring bobsled tryout camp. Excited by the prospect of exploring new opportunities, Mitchell is set to join the Canadian bobsled team for a training camp in Whistler, B.C., ahead of the upcoming World Cup season.
Having achieved success in cycling by winning gold in the women’s sprint at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, Mitchell, originally from Sherwood Park, Alta., is now eager to test her skills in bobsled. Despite initial attempts at bobsledding at a younger age, Mitchell believes her improved leg power and explosiveness from cycling will translate well to this new challenge.
Expressing her intention to eventually return to track cycling with a goal of competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Mitchell acknowledges the unique opportunity to potentially become a dual-season Olympian like a few Canadian athletes before her. Embracing the supportive environment of the bobsled team, Mitchell is focused on contributing positively to Team Canada, whether as an active member on the ice or as a supportive teammate.
Reflecting on her decision to take a break from track cycling following the Paris Olympics and explore other sports like speedskating, Mitchell admits to feeling the physical toll of transitioning back to high-impact activities like bobsledding. However, with her determination and coachability noted by Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton’s high-performance team, Mitchell is seen as a promising addition to the bobsled squad with a winning mentality and eagerness to excel in the challenging sport.
As Mitchell continues her journey in bobsledding, she remains focused on staying healthy, enjoying the process, and contributing positively to Team Canada’s pursuit of excellence on the winter sports stage.
