It is that time of the year again as the nominations for the prestigious Oscars have been announced. For those who are not avid movie enthusiasts, chances are you have only managed to watch a couple of the films vying for the top award in the film industry. 

As many parts of Canada face extreme cold weather this weekend, it presents an ideal opportunity to catch up on the latest films. 

Here is a comprehensive guide to the movies contending for the Academy Award for Best Picture this year and where you can stream or watch them. 

Bugonia

Plot: The storyline revolves around two conspiracy-obsessed young men who believe a high-powered CEO is an alien aiming to destroy the Earth and decide to kidnap her. 

Cast: Starring Emma Stone as the CEO, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Alicia Silverstone, and comedian Stavros Halkias.

Plot: The movie follows a retired Formula One racing legend who mentors a young prodigy driver. 

Cast: Featuring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, and Kerry Condon. 

Streaming: F1 can be streamed on Apple TV with a subscription or rented/purchased on the same platform.

Frankenstein

Plot: Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of the classic gothic tale portrays a scientist who creates a monstrous being with dire consequences. 

Cast: Featuring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth. 

Streaming: Frankenstein is available for streaming on Netflix.

Hamnet 

Plot: Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, the film depicts the family life of William Shakespeare and his wife dealing with the loss of their son to the plague, potentially influencing the creation of Hamlet

Cast: Starring Paul Mescal as Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as his wife. 

Streaming: Hamnet is currently only playing in theatres.
