“PM Carney to Meet with Provincial Premiers in Saskatchewan”

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to convene with the provincial premiers in Saskatchewan early next month, amid growing discontent among some western leaders towards Ottawa. The meeting, confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office following an announcement by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, is scheduled for June 2 in Saskatoon.

Ford, who labeled the meeting as an “olive branch” to the West and a move towards national unity, emphasized the need for the government to show more support to Saskatchewan and Alberta. He underscored the importance of addressing the past neglect faced by these provinces and expressed confidence in Carney’s willingness to engage constructively.

Following Carney’s recent election victory, which marked the fourth consecutive Liberal government, the premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan called for a reevaluation of how Ottawa interacts with the western regions.

Premier Scott Moe of Saskatchewan, in a post-election news conference, stressed the necessity for Ottawa to improve engagement with the province on key issues such as clean energy regulations and carbon pricing. Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, while opposing the idea of secession, proposed reducing the requirements for holding a referendum in 2026.

During a recent call with Carney, premiers did not delve into the topic of potential referendums, focusing instead on the importance of unity. Ford emphasized the significance of Carney demonstrating support for the western provinces by diversifying trade, expanding pipeline infrastructure, and fulfilling his promise to elevate Canada’s energy sector.

In response to secession discussions in Alberta and Saskatchewan, British Columbia Premier David Eby reiterated his stance against separation and urged his counterparts to resist any separatist sentiments, highlighting the need for solidarity in defending the country.

Carney, addressing questions about the referendum legislation during a news conference in Washington, emphasized the strength derived from provincial collaboration. The premiers’ call with Carney followed his recent meeting with President Donald Trump, where he was commended for his diplomatic approach.

Trade, particularly in the context of relations with the U.S., is likely to dominate the upcoming meeting of first ministers. Carney aims to reduce interprovincial trade barriers by Canada Day, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the Canadian economy through collaborative efforts.

The meeting in Saskatoon on June 2 signifies a continued commitment to enhancing national unity and fostering economic growth across Canada.
