Renowned Canadian scientist Birutė Mary Galdikas dies at 79

Date:

Renowned Canadian scientist Birutė Mary Galdikas, known for her lifelong dedication to orangutan research and conservation, has passed away at the age of 79 in Los Angeles. Galdikas, who founded the Orangutan Foundation International in 1986 to support her work in Borneo, Indonesia, succumbed to lung cancer early Tuesday morning surrounded by her loved ones.

Described by Ruth Linsky, a PhD candidate who worked closely with her, as having an unwavering commitment to orangutans, Galdikas spent over five decades in Indonesia, becoming a leading expert on the primates. Her efforts played a crucial role in preserving the largest wild orangutan population at Tanjung Puting National Park, where she established a research station.

Despite initial skepticism from her professors, Galdikas ventured into the unexplored forests of Borneo in 1971 with her husband, photographer Rod Brindamour. Over the years, she meticulously studied the orangutans, documenting their behaviors, social structures, and reproduction patterns. Her work highlighted the vulnerability of orangutans to habitat loss due to their slow reproductive rates.

Galdikas’s contributions extended beyond research, as she also set up a successful rehabilitation center that facilitated the return of captive orangutans to the wild. Her dedication led to the designation of Tanjung Puting as a national park in 1983. Throughout her career, she emphasized her curiosity about human origins and our connection to the natural world.

Recognized with numerous awards for her environmental achievements, Galdikas was a trailblazer in the field of primatology. Her legacy, as noted by peers and colleagues, has left an indelible mark on orangutan conservation and public awareness of these extraordinary creatures. She is survived by her three children and grandchildren.
