Graham Smith, the CEO of the anti-monarchist organization Republic, is urging King Charles to stop avoiding direct interactions with the media and address his brother’s recent arrest publicly. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was apprehended on Thursday over suspected misconduct in public office connected to his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Although released under investigation, he has not been formally charged or cleared.
The police had been reviewing revelations from the Epstein files indicating that Mountbatten-Windsor shared trade information with Epstein in 2010 during his tenure as Britain’s special envoy for international trade. While Charles issued a written statement pledging full support and cooperation with the police inquiry, Smith argues that mere assurances are insufficient. He insists that the public deserves transparency regarding the Royal Family’s awareness of Mountbatten-Windsor’s interactions with Epstein.
Smith, who reported Mountbatten-Windsor to Thames Valley Police based on his appearances in the Epstein files, conversed with Nil Köksal from As It Happens. In their dialogue, Smith acknowledged his belief that his complaint likely prompted the police investigation leading to Andrew’s arrest.
The allegations against Mountbatten-Windsor are distinct from those brought forward by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of trafficking and sexual abuse in 2001. Despite Andrew’s denial of Giuffre’s claims, Smith hopes that the recent arrest will prompt a reconsideration of previously overlooked cases involving the Royals, emphasizing the importance of addressing the suffering of victims.
Smith also criticized King Charles for relying on prepared statements rather than engaging directly with the media and the public. He emphasized the need for the Royal Family to adopt a more transparent approach, cooperate fully with law enforcement, and end the culture of secrecy surrounding the monarchy to avoid further reputational damage.
The anti-monarchist group’s CEO warned that continued secrecy or reluctance to disclose pertinent information could have severe consequences for the Royal Family’s standing, particularly if details about their financial practices, lobbying activities, and associations are exposed to the public eye.
