Julia Scheib celebrated a remarkable victory in the World Cup giant slalom event on home soil near Vienna, Austria. The event marked a significant moment for Scheib as she clinched the top spot in the discipline standings, setting the stage for a thrilling start to the 2026 season and the upcoming Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
In a thrilling competition, Scheib outpaced Camille Rast of Switzerland by a mere 0.14 seconds and Sara Hector of Sweden, the reigning Olympic champion, by 0.40 seconds. Val Grenier from St. Isidore, Ontario, finished closely behind in fourth place, just 0.77 seconds off Scheib’s pace in Semmering.
Reflecting on her victory, Scheib expressed her surprise and elation, describing the challenging course as bumpy and tough. She credited her success to a flawless finish that propelled her past Rast in the final run. With this win, Scheib not only secured her third GS victory of the season but also claimed the overall lead in the giant slalom discipline standings.
The competition also saw Alice Robinson, Scheib’s primary GS rival, encounter a setback as she skied out in the first run, allowing Scheib to extend her lead in the discipline standings. Robinson, a two-time winner this season, faced disappointment after a mishap in the opening run, which hindered her chances of accumulating points.
Mikaela Shiffrin, a dominant force in slalom, faced challenges in GS, finishing 1.45 seconds behind Scheib. Shiffrin, a four-time winner in Semmering, acknowledged the difficulty of the course and her ongoing efforts to regain her form in the discipline following a previous injury.
As Scheib prepares for the Olympic giant slalom race on February 15, her focus remains sharp, with ambitions to excel in both GS and super-G events. The competition showcased the talent and determination of the athletes, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
