“Security Upgrade Unveiled for Louvre Museum”

Date:

The director of the Louvre museum revealed plans on Wednesday to enhance security measures following a recent jewel theft incident. Laurence des Cars announced that approximately 100 new surveillance cameras will be operational by the end of next year, alongside anti-intrusion systems that will be deployed within two weeks.

Describing the anti-intrusion systems as tools to deter unauthorized access to the museum, des Cars emphasized the importance of safeguarding the museum’s premises. She addressed the need for swift action after the theft, stating that more than 20 emergency measures will be implemented, including the appointment of a security coordinator.

The heist, which occurred on October 19, saw thieves breaching a window into the Apollo Gallery using power tools intended for concrete, resulting in the theft of crown jewels valued at 88 million euros. Des Cars highlighted that the methods used by the robbers were unexpected, as the display cases had been reinforced in 2019 to withstand internal threats.

Footage from the museum’s cameras revealed the resilience of the display cases during the robbery, indicating the challenges faced by the thieves. Des Cars stressed the importance of enhancing security as part of the “Louvre New Renaissance” plan, a long-term initiative aimed at modernizing the museum’s infrastructure and improving visitor experience.

Due to the strain of mass tourism, the Louvre has limited daily visitor numbers to 30,000, despite surpassing eight million visitors this year. Des Cars acknowledged the need for upgrading outdated equipment from the museum’s 1980s renovation, citing recent closures of fragile office spaces and public galleries.

The upcoming security enhancements at the Louvre reflect a commitment to preserving its cultural treasures and ensuring a safe environment for visitors.
