Senators Introduce Resolution to Curb U.S. Military Action in Venezuela

Date:

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, representing both the Democratic and Republican parties, introduced a resolution on Wednesday to prevent any military intervention in Venezuela by the United States without the explicit approval of Congress. This action follows recent statements made by President Donald Trump hinting at an imminent military campaign.

In recent weeks, U.S. military forces have conducted over 20 operations targeting suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific regions, resulting in the deaths of at least 83 individuals. Trump’s administration has been steadily increasing military activities against the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro under the pretext of combating the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S.

Despite Maduro’s denial of involvement in drug trafficking, Trump has openly discussed the possibility of launching a ground assault on Venezuelan soil, emphasizing the urgency of such actions. In response to these statements, Senators Tim Kaine, Chuck Schumer, Adam Schiff, and Rand Paul filed a resolution under the War Powers Act to restrain any unauthorized military actions.

Expressing concerns over the lack of legal justification and congressional oversight regarding potential military conflicts with Venezuela, the senators emphasized the need to prevent an unlawful war that could endanger American troops. The senators had previously indicated their intention to introduce the resolution if military action was initiated by the administration, a decision reaffirmed following Trump’s recent remarks.

Schiff issued a statement underscoring the importance of upholding constitutional processes and preventing unauthorized military engagements. The War Powers Resolution is expected to undergo a prompt vote in the Senate according to the legislative procedures in place.
