“Shane Bieber Exercises Player Option, Stays with Blue Jays”

Date:

Starting pitcher Shane Bieber has decided to stay with the Toronto Blue Jays for the upcoming season instead of testing free agency. He has chosen to exercise his player option for the 2026 season, confirming this decision on Wednesday. Acquired from the Cleveland Guardians during the summer trade deadline, the 30-year-old Bieber had a 4-2 record and a 3.57 earned-run average with Toronto.

His return ensures the stability of the starting rotation, which is expected to include Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, and potentially Eric Lauer. The future of free agents Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt with the team remains uncertain.

During the postseason, Bieber performed well with a 2-1 record and a 3.86 ERA. Notably, he secured a key road victory in Game 4 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in the 11th inning due to a go-ahead home run by Will Smith.

Since his debut in the major leagues in 2018, Bieber has amassed a record of 66 wins and 34 losses with a 3.24 ERA. He previously clinched the American League Cy Young Award in the shortened 2020 season after a remarkable 8-1 record and a 1.63 ERA with the Guardians.

Bieber made a strong comeback in his first start for Toronto on August 22, allowing only two hits over six innings following his recovery from Tommy John surgery in April 2024. His decision to remain with the Blue Jays for the upcoming season was unexpected, as he had the potential to secure a lucrative long-term contract elsewhere. By staying with Toronto, he aims to further enhance his value in a team poised for another competitive season.

The Blue Jays had a successful campaign last season, winning 94 games and clinching the AL East Division title. They went on to defeat the New York Yankees in the AL Division Series and the Seattle Mariners in the AL Championship Series before facing defeat against the Dodgers in the World Series.

Spring training is set to commence in mid-February, with the Blue Jays opening their 2026 season on March 26 against the Oakland Athletics.
