“Smart Tablets Revolutionize Menstrual Cup Hygiene”

Date:

Close to a quarter of the global population experiences menstruation, yet advancements in menstrual products have been limited, according to a researcher at McMaster University.

Zeinab Hosseinidoust, a professor at McMaster University specializing in chemical engineering, highlighted the potential for innovation in menstrual products. Together with associate professor Tohid Didar, they developed smart tablets to enhance the accessibility of menstrual cups and minimize associated inconveniences.

UN Women reports that over two billion individuals worldwide menstruate, with one in six Canadian menstruators facing period poverty. The average Canadian spending approximately $6,000 on menstrual products during their lifetime, while a quarter of Canadians hold negative perceptions about menstruation, according to federal government data.

Menstrual cups have gained popularity for their eco-friendly and cost-effective nature, offering reusable options for years. Addressing concerns about the mess associated with menstrual cups, Hosseinidoust explored social media comments to identify common issues and devised a solution with the smart tablets.

The tablets, made from seaweed-based materials, are designed to work with menstrual cups, providing a convenient and hygienic solution. They offer the potential to detect and prevent infections such as UTIs and bacterial vaginosis, leveraging bacteriophages to target harmful bacteria without harming beneficial flora.

By bridging the gap in menstrual product innovation, these tablets aim to encourage more individuals to adopt sustainable menstrual practices, reducing the environmental impact of disposable products. This research not only promotes dialogue and destigmatizes menstruation but also holds promise for broader applications beyond menstrual care products.

The development of these tablets marks a significant step towards addressing unmet needs in menstrual health, signaling a positive shift towards more inclusive and innovative solutions in the menstrual product industry.
